Veteran Sri Lanka star Angelo Davis Mathews has been voted International Cricket Council Men's Player of the Month for May 2022.He is the first ever Sri Lankan to win this award.
Angelo Mathews is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer and also a former captain in all formats, test cricket,one day international cricket and twenty20 international cricket.He was also a member of the team that won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and was also a part of the team that made the finals of 2011 Cricket World Cup, 2009 ICC World Twenty20 and 2012 ICC World Twenty20.
He played a vital and a key role to safeguard these wins. He is also an occasional right-arm medium bowler who can deliver swinging match-winning spells.
Angelo Davis Mathews began his journey of the International Cricket career in the year of 2008. As per him he had the intention of becoming the best allrounder but due to injuries and other works he has given the primacy to the batting side.
Anjelo Mathews made his international debut in a One Day International in November 2008 against Zimbabwe and made his Test debut in July 2009, against Pakistan at Galle. In February 2013 Anjelo Mathews became the youngest Test Captain at the age of 25 and he hold that captaincy for almost 2 years.
Anjelo Mathews and another Sri Lankan Cricket star Lasith Malinga holds the highest ninth wicket partnership against Australia in 2010. Also he has the record of most wins as a captain in ODI format on the year of 2014.And also he'a the fifith Sri Lankan Cricketer to reach 6000 Test runs.
Anjelo Mathews has won the award for Sri Lanka Cricket Cricketer of the year 2015.He was also the Wisden Cricketer of the Year 2015.
On July 7, 2021, Mathews announced that he is considering retiring from international cricket in all formats because he had not signed a tour contract with SLC for the limited overs series against India, and he had complained about the management's unethical treatment of the senior players in the team.His decision stems mostly from a financial issue with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, as well as SLC's plans to cut numerous senior players from the national side in limited overs contests in order to develop and give opportunities to new players ahead of the 2023 World Cup. But after sorting out the issues with the SLC Board he continued to play in test and ODI matches.
To treasure the award "ICC Men's Player of the Month", Angelo Mathews defeated Asitha Fernando, a fellow countryman, and Mushfiqur Rahim, a Bangladeshi star.
Angelo Mathews was outstanding in the two - match series against Bangaladesh which was held in Chattogram and Mirpur away from home. He was able to finish the two match series as the highest run-getter with a total of 344 runs. This included two centuries. In the first test match which was held in Chattogram from May 15 to May 19,Anjelo Mathews narrowly missed out on a double ton at 199.
In the second test match which was in Mirpur from May 23 to May 27, Anjelo Mathews scored a dazzling 145 in the first innings in Sri Lanka's brilliant 10- wicket win over the hosts,the Bangaladesh.
This win against the Bangaladesh helped the Islanders to climb to No.4 in the International Cricket Council World Test Championship table with a point percentage of 55.56.
Angelo Mathews magnificent returns after the break in this Bangaladesh Test Series first helped him to climb to No.15 in the International Cricket Council Test Batters Rankings and now helped him to secure the award and win the ICC Men's Player of the Month Award.
Angelo Davis Mathews now also holds the honour of becoming the first ever Sri Lankan Professional Cricket Player to win the Player Of The Month (POTM) award since its establishment in January 2021.
After being named the International Cricket Council Men's Player Of The Month for May 2022 ,Anjelo Mathews said:"I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. JP Duminy, the former South Africa international and International Cricket Council Player of the Month voting panel member admired Angelo Davis Mathews saying, "The great grit and determination that characterized Angelo’s performances during the month has shown that he still has the hunger and desire to make the difference at the elite level."
